The NICU at University Hospital's Case Medical Center is split into four distinct 'quarters' that are accessed from a central crossroads upon entry. This made the wayfinding methodology very simple. Different color palettes and icons were used to define each quarter. These were applied to department portals, wall finishes, floor graphics, donor plaques, and directional and room identification signage. The NICU was the first sign program to be installed from a much greater program, that hadn't yet been fully realized.Since this was the case, careful consideration had to be given to ensure that this design was aligned with the intended future aesthetic and vision.
